İspanya Kralı 3. Felipenin yaklaşık 400 yıl önce yaptırdığı bu meydan Madrid'in merkezinde ve en turistik 
yerlerinin arasında bulunmaktadır. Kendi heykeli de meydanın ortasında duruyor. Zamanında kraliyet törenleri, kilisenin kutsal törenleri, boğa güreşi vb. turnuvalar için bile kullanılan Plaza de Mayor şu anda kafelerin olduğu bir meydan olarak turistlerin ziyaretini bekliyor.

Plaza Mayor meydanında turist olarak bilgi alabilmeniz için kurulmuş Tourist Center'lardan biri bulunuyor. Buradan harita, bilgi, bilet vb. alabilirsiniz. Madrid'de metro ve otobüslerde geçerli olan Tourist Travel Pass kartı sınırsız biniş hakkıyla günlük 8 Euroya satılıyor. İki günlük almak isterseniz 13,4 Euro vermeniz gerekiyor. Plaza Mayor meydanının 4 tarafı da kapalı ama farklı yerlerinden caddelere geçiş var. Bu caddelerin hepsi de ünlü ve canlı caddeler. Buralarda bir şeyler yiyerek günü geçirebilirsiniz. Meydanda bol bol sokak gösteri sanatçısı da görebilirsiniz. Bazıları oldukça keyifli.
