Sevilla, Endülüs Emevilerinin yönetiminden 3. Felipe zamanında yani 1248 yılında ispanyolların eline geçtiğinde bir cami olan bu yapı zamanla mimarisinde yapılan değişikliklerle beraber büyük bir katedrale dönüştürülüyor. Caminin minaresi ise Giralda kulesine (La Giralda) çevriliyor. Şehrin merkezinde ve belkide en güzel yerlerinden birinde olan bu yapının asıl adı Santa Maria Katedrali olarak geçiyor. Katedral, dünyanın en büyük katedrali olarak Guiness Rekorlar Kitabına girmiş. Eşsiz mimarisi ve detaylarındaki özen ile kendisine hayran bırakan bu yapının hemen yanındaki La Giralda yani Giralda kulesine çıkarak Sevilla şehrini yaklaşık 100 metre yükseklikten izleyerek bu keyfi yaşayabiliyorsunuz.


Katedralin en büyük özelliklerinden biri ise Amerika kıtasını keşfeden Kristof Kolomb'un bizzat kraliçe tarafından maddi destek verilerek keşfe gönderildiği yer olmasıdır. Zaten Kristof Kolomb'un mezarı da bu katedralin içerisinde bulunmaktadır. Kristof Kolomb Amerika'yı keşfinden sonra ölünce Küba bölgesine gömülmüş fakat yıllar sonra kıtada ispanyol sömürgesi kalmayınca Kristof Kolombun mezarının taşınması da gündeme gelmiştir. Ancak Kristof Kolombun "Beni İspanya toprağına gömmeyin." vasiyetinden dolayı değişik bir çözüm bulunmuştur. Mezar 4 tane adamın omuzları üzerinde tabut içerisinde havada asılı durmaktadır. Yani toprağa gömmeyerek vasiyetini yerine getirdiklerini düşünerek Kristof Kolombu yolculuğa çıktığı yere geri getirmişlerdir.

Giriş ücreti, ziyaret saatleri, ücretsiz ziyaret saatleri nelerdir?
Sevilla Katedrali her gün 09:30-16:30 arası ziyarete açıktır. Eğer 09:30'dan önce o tarafa yolunuz düşerse katedralin ziyarete açık olduğunu görebilirsiniz hatta şanslıysanız içeriye ücretsiz olarak girebilirsiniz. Katedrale giriş ücreti kişi başı 8 Euro, öğrencilere ise 4 Euro'dur. Engelliler, 14 yaşın altındakiler ve sevilla 'da oturanlara ise ücretsizdir. Bir de Pazar günleri ücretsizdir bu katedrali gezmek. Bu bilet ile aynı zamanda La Giralda'ya da çıkabiliyorsunuz. La giraldaya çıkıp sevillayı tepeden izlemenizi öneririz. Buradan aldığınız biletle hemen yakınında bulunan İglesia Del Salvador kilisesini de gezebilirsiniz. Pazartesi günleri önceden rezervasyon yaptırmanız halinde La Giraldaya ücretsiz olarak 16:30 ve 18:30 saatleri arasında da çıkabilirsiniz.

Katedralin çevresi çok işlek bir mekan. Kafeler, restoranlar, hediyelikçiler, barlar, flamenko yerleri gibi mekanlar bulmak mümkün. Aynı zamanda önünde sürekli faytonlar bulunmakta. Bu faytonlarla şehir turu yapabilirsiniz. 40 Euro'ya 4 kişilik faytona binebilirsiniz. Burası aynı zamanda Alcazar Sarayına ve Barrio Santa Cruz mahellesine de çok yakın.
